I didn’t see this movie coming. I saw a small clip on Instagram one day and thought, Oh, looks interesting. So here is your Spontaneous movie review.
I also want to answer one of the questions that everyone seems to be boggled about, and that’s “In Spontaneous, why did they explode?”
But to be upfront, it was a fun movie to watch.
Spontaneous movie plot
Here is your Spontaneous movie review. I’m sure many will hate it because I actually loved it.
Spontaneous is a horror movie, a coming-of-age movie, and a romantic-comedy. It’s about high school seniors who start exploding, leading to their quarantine, and the government’s search for a cure.
The characters were all likeable, witty, and fun. The lines in this movie are great. I’m surprised we don’t have more quotes like we do from the movie Mean Girls.
What I didn’t like
I honestly didn’t like the boyfriend character, Dylan (played by Charlie Plummer). I mean, he was a fun and adorable companion to Mara (portrayed by Katherine Langford). But he reminds me of someone I know in real life who irks me, and I couldn’t see past that.
But that’s my hang-up, not yours.
And now the main question on everyone’s mind, in the section below.
In Spontaneous, why do they explode?
Many people seem to be bothered by the fact that they never address the issue. In this movie, Spontaneous, why did they explode?
Well, the movie is about spontaneous human combustion, which in itself is not explained.
There have been numerous cases throughout history where someone has seemingly exploded, and no one can come up with a reason why this has happened.
Some people believe spontaneous human combustion is a myth, while others seek to explain it. However, all explanations make almost no sense, lack scientific evidence, or seem wacky.
So, in Spontanous, why did they explode?
Considering we don’t have a real explanation for it in real life, the movie leaves it that way. Because in real life, if this happened, we probably wouldn’t know either.
But here are some of the explanations I’ve heard about, as well as some that I’ve researched.
Spontaneous Human Combustion: Reasons Why People Explode
Brace yourself because there aren’t a lot of explanations that are simply, well, dumb.
Too gassy
I once read that it can happen if your body is storing too much gas, and you go near a flame, you can combust. But it has to be a ton of gas, not just because you ate too much cabbage that day.
The Wick Effect
Some argue that spontaneous human combustion has been misinterpreted over the years, as it is physically impossible for a body to combust spontaneously. They think someone’s clothes have been set on fire, and when the fire burns through your skin, exposing your fat, your fat acts as an igniter.
Alcoholism
The “pickling” effect (yes, I made that term up lol) alcohol has on your body while you drink consumes your insides until you ignite.
Smoking
If you have all the symptoms of someone who might combust, smoking is sometimes seen as the igniter that starts the fire.
These are a few reasons why in Sponatenous, the movie, they might have exploded. But as you see, all these reasons are stupid and would have ruined a perfectly good movie.
So, at the end of the day, I’m glad they left it unexplained.
Also, I didn’t read the book, so I can’t guarantee there wasn’t an explanation beyond anything I have in this blog post about why they exploded. If you read the novel and it does, please leave a comment. I’d love to know.
