Why All The Hate for Fear Street: Prom Queen?

I don’t understand the hate for Fear Street: Prom Queen. If you’re a horror lover, like I am, and constantly watch horror movies, you’ll know the different grades of movies out there. For instance, A-rated and B-rated movies. However, that’s just pop culture’s way of referencing and measuring things.

In reality, there are horror movies that take themselves way too seriously, campy B-rated horror, and everything in between. For instance, there’s a genre that, well, it’s probably not a genre, but there are many in an “unheard-of” genre, such as the “hookey” horror movie (like Santa Clarita Diet). And that’s where I put Fear Street: Prom Queen.

What Is The Fear Street: Prom Queen Plot?

It’s 1988, and the seniors are ready for their final moments at Shadyside High School. Six contestants are vying for the title of prom queen. They are:

Lori Granger (India Flower) and Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza), along with their “Wolfpack,” which includes nominees such as Christy Renault, Linda Harper, Debbie Winters, and Melissa McKendrick.

Meanwhile, you also have Lori Granger’s best friend, Megan Rogers, who is a horror-loving, pot-smoking oddball with an affinity for horror prosthetics that look as realistic as they come. She’s a prankster and loves to scare people.

And now that it’s prom, there’s a killer on the loose, killing all the contestants.

And we’re all dying to know who the masked killer is.

I love movie posters! Small image, but good anyway.

Is the acting any good?

The acting is subpar, but it’s consistent among all the Fear Street movies. They feel like YA acting a la Twilight because they are YA movies.

And this is where it feels hookey to me. The acting is a little over the top, dare I say, obnoxious. However, I like this world, and I know this comes with the territory, so I’m not complaining; I’m just informing you so you’re aware.

This acting also breaks the tension, allowing the viewer to understand that the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, making the experience more light-hearted and fun.

It’s horror, after all, and sometimes we wanna watch the obnoxious characters die off one by one.

Is Fear Street: Prom Queen’s storyline original?

The storyline is not as original as you’d think. There are many horror movies set in a prom (Carrie, Prom Night, etc.). And slasher films have a very formulaic structure.

I mean, we already know there’s a killer on the loose. And we understand this killer is going to pick them off one by one.

It doesn’t get more predictable than that.

But that’s not why we watch slasher films.

We watch slasher films because of the kills. That’s probably the only reason.

The more creative the kills are, the more we love the movie.

So, if you’re scoring Fear Street: Prom Queen on any other metric, you’re doing it wrong.

With that said, how original are the kills? Let’s get into that below.

Some fun notable scenes (SPOILER ALERT)

Let’s talk about the kills.

In any slasher film, some kills are lame, some are amazing, and others you could do without.

For instance, I saw the electrocution scene coming. We’ve seen this repeated in slasher films numerous times. So, I was disappointed in that one.

However, the circular saw scene was gruesome and incredible. I mean, talk about close-up, in-your-face, chucks of flesh, realism. That one surprised me, and I couldn’t believe they went there. Simply amazing!

Other kill scenes were simple yet effective but nothing earth-shattering.

Overall, I was satisfied with the kill scenes; I should rephrase, I wasn’t disappointed.

What I Didn’t Like About Fear Street: Prom Queen?

The leading actresses looked so similar I had trouble telling them apart. For a while, I thought they were the same person. It made me wonder if I believe all white people look alike, and that just didn’t sit well with me. Ultimately, there’s a reason they look alike, but I won’t get into that here; you’ll just have to watch the movie.

Tiffany (on the left) and Lori on the right. Who can tell them apart? I couldn’t.

The unoriginal Scream-like twist in the middle of the movie disappointed me. Not only has this been done before, but Slasher, the Netflix and Shudder original series, did it too. I’m thrilled they took it to the next level, but every time I see this in a slasher film, it makes me feel like they couldn’t come up with something original.

My attention span must be deteriorating because I couldn’t remember who Tiffany’s father was for the life of me. Tiffany screams, “Daddy!” like we were supposed to know who he was. He came out of left field. We saw him once at the beginning, and that’s it.

Also, that dance-off scene came out of nowhere. Wow. But I mean, it didn’t “break” the film for me.

Why All The Hate?

Is the film perfect? Absolutely not. But there is no reason for all the hate. After all, we watch horror movies for entertainment purposes because they’re works of art that we appreciate.

The social media hate has to stop, not just for this film, but for all films, and for everything. Learn to love things or simply dislike them, but not hate them. Learn to have an opinion or trust and believe that your life will be just as disappointing as everything you see.

Ok, enough preaching.

Is Fear Street: Prom Queen Worth Watching?

If you like the other Fear Street movies, I’d say they are all equal in my eyes. What I mean is that the acting, the drama, the horror, the genre, they all feel like they’re cut from the same cloth. And that’s a good thing.

I’m giving Fear Street: Prom Queen 3 Bloody Hatches. I liked it. It was entertaining, but it wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever seen.

Do I think I lost two hours of my life? Nope.
